Tournament Buy In

Poker Tournament Buy Ins

Tournaments – If you only play tournaments it is easy for you to lose track of your buy ins and over spend your bankroll. When playing multi-table or large player tournaments it is important to keep in mind the odds of finishing in the money. With so many players in the game, odds are you will not finish in the money in every tournament you play in. Therefore you must keep this in mind before buying in. If you want to play tournaments, you need to make sure your bankroll is large enough to keep you in the game... even when you go several tournaments with out making the money. This means that you should never be risking more that 5% of your overall bankroll on any tournament buy in. This ensures that you can absorb several losses while waiting to make the money and possibly get a large payday.

If you play sit & go's or single table tournaments, you can be a little more risky. Since there are far fewer players you can assume that you will cash more often and therefore the streaks between making the money will be shorter. If you are a solid player you should be safe risking 10% of your bankroll per sit & go.

If you enjoy playing large tournaments, but your bankroll does not warrant the high buy ins, you should consider a satellite strategy. By designating the amount you can afford to spend and using it to play in lower buy in satellites. You may be able to win your entry into the larger tournament, but still stay within your bankrolls tournament buy in limits.
