Buy-in and Bankroll Tips

There are several factors to consider when deciding what limit game you should play. The most important of these is to know how much money you feel comfortable losing. Before you answer…none, keep in mind that there is always a risk when playing poker, and even the best players in the world take a beating sometimes.

20smoneySo only play with money you can afford to lose, period. Think poker as an entertainment expense. If you win, great, but if you lose, it’s not the end of the world- and you had fun in the process.

Once you’ve established your bankroll amount or the amount of money you feel comfortable playing with, it’s time to find a game that’s right for you. Remember, Poker is a game of skill, luck and leverage. So while you may want to sit down at a higher limit game to cash in on bigger pots, your bankroll, and skill level, may dictate that you start out at a lower limit table and working your way up.

There’s no steadfast rule to limit poker buy-ins. Most poker rooms require ten times the ante to play. So you would need $20 to sit down at a $2/4 game. While this is the poker room norm, I never recommend this low of a buy-in.

Most experts say not to buy into a limit game with less than 50 to 70 times the small blind. This would mean to be comfortable at a $2/4 table; you would need $120 (not $20).

Also keep in mind that just because you can afford to lose the money, doesn’t mean you are ready to play high limit games.

You also have to consider your personal comfort level. Simply being able to afford the loss is not enough. You need to know your comfort zone. If you’re the type of person who freaks out if you drop a dollar down a sewer, stay away from high limit poker games.

You should never lose sleep over losses. Poker is a game. If it’s causing you stress, you’re risking too much.

The great benefit of playing poker online is that with so many poker rooms and so many people playing, you will always be able to find a game in your comfort zone. Whether your bankroll is $10 or $10,000, there is no reason why you can’t enjoy the action and excitement of live real money poker.

All of the online poker sites listed on ThePokerSource have limits that range from “micro” to high stakes, and there’s always people playing at each.
